Keynote Addresses
Great stories. Lots of laughter. Irresistible impact.

“When I got to the scene, I found Officer Clifton being attended to by the paramedics. They were bandaging his eye where bullet and metal fragments had impacted his face. Both he and Officer Fisher said “You need to check on Harris, Chief. He’s the one who’s hurt the worst.”

As Officer Fisher escorted me a few yards across the parking lot to Officer Harris’ location, I surveyed the area. Police cars and ambulances were everywhere, blue and red lights flashing. Yellow barrier tape defined the most crucial areas of the scene where a young police officer was down…shot by a madman at the end of a pursuit.

The medics were working hurriedly on Officer Harris and there was a lot of blood on the ground. He was still conscious, however, and his eyes were clear. He looked up at me intently, searching for words of wisdom and comfort. I was struggling to formulate the right response, because a leaders’ words at a time like this can make a significant impact. It was Fisher, however, who spoke next. He looked at me and said “Chief, this is Officer Harris,” then returning his gaze to the officer, “He’s been shot in the but-tock.” Shades of Forrest Gump.

Harris laughed, I laughed, and Fisher howled. As strange as it may seem, it was the perfect thing to say. At that critical moment, with a life hanging in the balance, Fisher’s comment helped Harris to relax, undoubtedly lowering his blood pressure and lessening the flow from his wound. And I learned valuable lessons about courage and humor, timing and trust. Let me explain what I mean…”
